Thoughts on the WWDC23 keynote By Edward Willis (http://encw.xyz and gopher://encw.xyz) Published Jun/5/2023 As per usual they went goofy as heck with their presentation. I hope Apple goes back to their old stage keynotes. Those were a lot easier to watch. As for the operating system changes I saw a lot more features. Though I'm sure I'll probably find myself using some of them they seemed to be rather superfluous and amount to nothing but more bloat. I found their mental health tools comical, seeing as using a smartphone, especially using it too much, is tremendously bad for one's mindfulness and mental health. Their pitch is that instead of putting the phone down and spending time with a loved one, you should tell your phone how you feel and read some recommended articles. The Mac hardware they unveiled was good: A Macbook Air 15", Mac Studio refresh, and the long awaited Apple Silicon Mac Pro. That said I wish they'd come out with an expandable Mac tower more reasonably priced and aimed at gaming, with full support for expansion graphics cards. Something like that might actually help with their gaming push. I didn't like their push into desktop web apps with Safari. Though I suppose their operating system is so big and bloated that I shouldn't have expected any different from them. Simple computing is clearly not a priority for them. The Vision Pro, the long awaited Apple AR/VR set, is a very cool new piece of tech. But at $3500 it isn't going to be mainstream. Hopefully the price for it or something like it is much lower in the future. Speaking of the future, this feels like it could be it. I didn't see much of anything about generative AI in their video. I like that. With Microsoft and Google going in head first, Apple it seems is holding off. That did take courage.
