On Electric Cars By Edward Willis (http://encw.xyz and gopher://encw.xyz) Published Oct/27/2023 Electric cars are apparently not selling as well as people thought they would. I think some part of that is because the automakers misunderstand how to position them. Automakers seem to think that electric is a premium drivetrain technology, and should accompany higher end cars with higher base prices, more standard features and more expensive options. Maybe for some small segment of the population that is smitten with Elon, or new technology for the sake of it being new, or is interested in high dollar environmental virtue signaling, that is true, and they're willing to shell out the big bucks for the shiny new toy, but for most people an electric car is not compelling. An electric car is a huge step back in terms of range and spontaneity. The freedom of the open road becomes the carefully planned passage along the grid supported corridor. If the government and automakers are intent on forcing these things on people, then automakers are going to have to make these things CHEAP. Electric cars aren't something we want, but they are something we will be forced to put up with eventually. It'll be an electric car or no car for those of us not born into very wealthy families.
